Why buy new when a well-preserved secondhand version does exactly the same job for a fraction of the cost — or nothing at all? Furnishing a dorm room or first apartment adds up fast if everything comes brand new, and a lot of that cost is genuinely avoidable once you know where to actually look.
Good communication can save you real money before you’ve even moved in. The last post covered checking what your school already provides. This one covers the other half of the same problem: what happens when you and your roommate both show up with your own mini fridge, your own microwave, and your own set of pots and pans, because nobody talked about it first.
Some dorm rooms come with a microwave, a refrigerator, or access to an ironing board in a shared laundry room. Some don’t. The specifics vary enormously by school, and sometimes by building on the same campus — which is exactly why generic “dorm shopping list” content from big retailers isn’t a reliable guide to what you actually need. It’s built to sell you everything, not to tell you what’s already covered.
Frugality and finding free opportunities is money smart. Not because being careful with money is a personality you need to adopt forever, but because right now, in college, it’s the single highest-leverage financial move available to you — and it won’t always be.
That distinction matters. Once you’re established in a career, you’ll be in a much better position to make different choices — eating out more, upgrading things sooner, spending less time hunting for the free version of something. College frugality isn’t a life sentence. It’s a phase that matches where you actually are right now: income is limited, expenses are front-loaded, and — this is the part people miss — you have access to an unusual number of free and discounted resources that disappear the moment you graduate.
